Do you really think steroids are that bad in baseball?
Seriously, think about it. I know steroids are in some way considered cheating but are they really? Its just helping your natural ability to produce testosterone ans so forth. And as much as people hate to admit it, two steroid users helped bring baseball back into the spotlight in the Summer of 99′. (Sosa and McGwire)
(only answer if you actually know something about baseball)
Sorry, but your argument that “it’s just helping your natural ability to produce testosterone” does not hold water. While the body does naturally produce testosterone, taking steroids can raise the amount of testosterone to unnatural levels. There are other medications that help the body’s natural ability to do certain things as well, and when used properly, can be a great benefit. For example, people with lung or breathing disorders (asthma for example) will often take Prednisone to allow them to live a more normal life. However, someone taking it to get their lung capacity up to unnatural levels, perhaps to become a world class marathoner, without the medical condition it is prescribed for is not using those drugs for their intended use, which technically is a violation of federal law. For example, a doctor can not legally prescribe high blood pressure medicine to cure athlete’s foot, because it is not an approved usage of that drug.
Another example of a drug that has definite medical benefits being misused would be the use of laxatives by anorexics. While all a laxative does is help your body’s natural ability to eliminate waste, anorexics will sometimes overuse them in order to lose weight by moving the little amount of food through their system before their body stores it. The same can be said of Ipecac syrup, a medicine intended to induce vomiting in case someone ingests a poison (perhaps a child drinking a household cleaner for example) which is also used by anorexics and bulimics.
And whether or not anyone feels that using steroids in the manner that ballplayers have been using them is medically acceptable, the bottom line is that it is against the rules. You can spout all the research you want, or can simply say “I don’t need no damn sources” and say that steroids have no effect whatsoever on a ballplayer’s ability, but it will not change the fact that these ballplayers broke the rules regarding steroid use BECAUSE they thought it was giving them an advantage. (And yes – they were breaking the rules, even before testing. Baseball has specifically banned steroids since 1991 – they just never could get the MLBPA to agree to random testing of any kind) They were not taking these drugs to get high, they were not taking them for actual medical reasons, they were taking them to get a leg up on the competition. And breaking any rule in a manner that you even perceive as giving you an unfair advantage over those who follow the rules is cheating.
